Sports Analytics

Sports has a great importance in the society. Understanding the sports makes it even more interesting and awesome. We do our job in making the sports more interesting by explaining it logically through statistics. We analyze and model several sports related performances. Right now, we mainly focus on the performance analysis of batting and bowling in Cricket. We use several advanced statistical tools to model the performances quite uniquely.

Significance of Numbers in Cricket
Cricket is a game of numbers. In this game, numbers play significant roles to characterize the performances of individuals and teams. It can be easily understood that statistics has a very important role to understand this game better. Therefore, appropriate statistics should be used to analyze the numbers of this game.

In Cricket, the misinterpretation of the numbers does not do the justice to the performances. For instance, the rain rules of 1992 World Cup, erroneous rules of post-1992 World Cup, and the flaws identified in Duckworth-Lewis methods are all against the spirits of fair competition. Moreover, modern statistical tools are available to get rid of all these anomalies.

Analysis of Batting Performances
Individual and team batting performances can also be interpreted in a much better way using modern statistical tools than it is done these days. Individual batting performances play big roles in the ranking and selection of players. Even the comparison of players’ batting performances should be fair and free from the bias in the analysis. It needs appropriate methods to analyze the performances.

Our aim is to provide solutions to remove the anomalies present in the current methods. It is essential to under-stand the game better and to provide a just and fair way to judge the performances.

What is Wrong with the Current Methods?
Currently, the batting averages of the batsmen are used to show their performances. Batting averages in Cricket are based on the average score of the of the batsmen over their completed innings (i.e., it is the ratio of the total runs scored to the number of times the batsman has got out). These batting averages do not show the exact characteristics of their overall performances. For instance, Tendulkar’s batting average is more than those of Lara and Shehwag. However, Lara’s extraordinary performances of 400 not out and 375 are completely hidden and not reflected in his average score. Similarly, the two 300 plus scores of Shehwag are not visible in his average.

In our method, we consider all the scores of the batsmen to characterize their career batting performances. In these new statistical methods, we uniquely characterize each batting career which provides meaningful ways to interpret the performances of the individual players. We have devel-oped separate methods for test Cricket and the limited over Cricket to provide meaningful analysis using the avail-able statistical tools.

We are also working towards similar analysis for Cricket teams and their performances.
